High Desert Band

If you like toe-tapping acoustic music with an old-time flavor, you’ll love the High Desert Band from Idaho’s Treasure Valley. They play music ranging from songs that were heard on the American frontier to modern folk and bluegrass, along with a big helping of their own original songs. The group consists of lead singer Randy Helton who excels at flat-picking melodies on his guitar and tickling audiences with his comic songs and the occasional yodel. Randy is also a talented song writer who has won contests with his entertaining and humorous lyrics. Playing upright bass and singing lead and harmony for the High Desert Band is Cathy Bourner. Cathy’s background includes early influence by folk and western style music and in the mid 90’s began playing bass in a bluegrass band. She is a talented singer and is the heart and soul of the band providing a steady beat on her vintage 1939 Kay upright bass, with a signature cowboy boot foot on the bottom. High Desert’s founding member is Jerry Firth, singing harmony and playing mandolin. Jerry’s background includes almost twenty years of playing time in several bluegrass bands in Oregon and Idaho. He is an aspiring luthier, building the instruments he plays. He enjoys playing the variety of music that defines the High Desert Band. Rounding out the line up is the newest member, Kayleigh Jack, a rising young fiddler and singer-song writer from Boise, Idaho. Since childhood, Kayleigh has played classical violin, fiddle, guitar and sang for gospel groups, orchestras, and bands. Naturally gifted with a keen sense of music and memory, Kayleigh performs virtually every genre of music. The group formed in 2003 and stays busy playing at music and art festivals, local farmers markets, as well as many private gigs. The band has a standing weekly gig each Thursday evening at Whitewater Pizza and Pasta located in Meridian on the corner of Eagle Road and Fairview.
